Your Body Already Knows: Dr. Nikki Arguinzoni-Gil on Menopause, Breast Cancer, and Trusting Yourself

with Dr. Nicole Arguinzoni-Gil

About this episode

For five years, Dr. Nicole asked her doctors to check her hormones and heard the same answer: they’re fine. She was exhausted, losing her words mid-sentence, and having anxiety attacks for the first time in her life. Then came the afternoon she collapsed on her couch with nothing left and no explanation. Her naturopathic physician, Dr. Nicole Arguinzoni-Gil (Dr. Nikki), explains what was really happening and the internal transitions every woman will face. Then Dr. Nikki shares a story she has never told publicly: her own breast cancer, found with no lump, only an itch and a feeling she tried to talk herself out of. Together they talk about trusting what your body already knows before anyone confirms it, learning to ask for help, and owning who you are at this stage of life. In this episode: The real difference between perimenopause, menopause and post-menopause, and why treating them the same can backfire What estradiol, progesterone and testosterone each do, and why low testosterone can take your drive with it Why so many women are dismissed when they report hormonal symptoms How Dr. Nikki’s instinct, with no lump, led her to the ultrasound that found her cancer Self-advocacy, second opinions, and trusting yourself when something feels wrong Letting go, surrendering, and learning to receive Disclosure: Dr. Nikki is Dr. Nicole’s own physician. Neither receives any compensation or affiliate benefit for this conversation. Medical disclaimer: This episode is for education and conversation, not medical advice. Hormone therapy is not right for everyone. Talk with your own licensed clinician about any symptoms, testing or treatment, and see a doctor promptly about any change in your breasts, including changes without a lump.

Show Notes

Most of the changes we talk about on The Room Between come from the outside: a job ends, a relationship changes, a child leaves home. This episode is about the changes that start inside the body, unchosen and often unseen, and what it takes to trust what you know about yourself before anyone confirms it. Dr. Nicole begins with a moment she has rarely described: the afternoon she collapsed on the couch with her head in her hands, exhausted for reasons no one could explain, after years of being told her hormones were fine. Her naturopathic doctor, Dr. Nikki Gill, explains what was actually happening. Perimenopause is the roller coaster; menopause is the steady decline after it. Knowing which one you are in changes how you should be treated. And for Dr. Nikki, menopause is not a decline. It can be the point where you finally know who you are, and get to decide what to do about it. For many women it is a Chrysalis Season no one around them can see, sometimes including their doctors. Then the conversation turns. Dr. Nikki shares, for the first time publicly, her own breast cancer diagnosis at 47, a year after losing her mother to cancer. There was no lump. There was an itch, a feeling, and a moment in a shower in London when she told herself something wasn't right. She talks about the second opinion that changed her treatment, the friends and faith that carried her, and the cry on a radiation table she didn't see coming.
